Explore/Exploit?

Updated: Jul 4, 2020

Hey m' peeps, hope you are doing alright.

I believe we have come to a point in our lives where we need to seriously think about our next steps, don't we?

I don't mean to scare you into a 9-5, but really, think about what you want to do in life and start taking actions, no matter how small they are. And no, having a job offer does not mean you have your lives figured out, unfortunately.

Listen, COVID-19 might make you think that you have all the time in the world to plan for your next step. Nah ah ah!

I have a solid, rather scientific reason for the disagreement.

We always jump between exploring the future and exploiting the present though some claim the superiority of one to another.

Computer scientists have revealed that, for explore-then-exploit type of games, the optimum switching time from exploration to exploitation is at about 30% of the duration of the games. In the game of life, that is when you are somewhere between 20 to 25 years old, which is NOW.

"Only if life is that simple," many would think.

Insightful or not, common sense tells us that we can't explore all the time. If you have focussed on exploring in the past, this is a good time to put your knowledge to test in real life. And I don't mean that you should stop exploring. Just remember that you did it for a reason in the first place - to exploit later down the road.

Let's go out there (not physically) and make a difference, or even better, be the difference. Take action. Start moving. Start exploiting.
