"It will take fierce determination to act now, to lay the foundations when we may not know all the details about how to shape the ceiling," Greta Thunberg announced in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.
What she advocated there is called cathedral thinking. It is about following your vision even when you are not entirely certain how it will play out towards the end of the journey. It is the willingness to take the leap of faith.
From boosting personal growth to solving ecological crisis, cathedral thinking is much needed, yet many people fail to do so.
Why?
Doubts often weight more than new ideas in decision making, especially when people don't understand the fundamentals of the relevant subject.
The main difference between people who value new, intangible ideas and those who don't is that the former see visions in them and the latter only question about them. Not that questioning is no good, it is just unproductive to stop there.
How to question right and follow through?
It is a human thing to believe in something. You can choose whether you want to do so, or not. But that's not the point. The real question should be, "what is the truth?"
Once you have done the due diligence to understand the fundamentals, trust what you found, even if it challenges your own set of beliefs. Digest, believe, preach.
In the deceivingly-predictable world
If I told you that the world will come to a standstill for whatever reason in the near future in early 2019, would you believe it? The world we live in is a deceivingly-predictable place. You think you've got the hang of it, and then it surprises you with the most, well, surprising events.
That's why our beliefs need constant updates. Human simply cannot fully comprehend the overwhelming complexity of the world, and you know someone is lying if they tell you they can. How can we make the most out of the time we have if we don't adjust regularly to new norms?
Arguably, the risks of holding onto outdated ideas outweigh those of moving forward. Why not be more flexible in how you manage your beliefs so that you can be an active part of the solutions to the many crises we are facing in the 21st century?
